Just to clarify—Usenet refers to the whole set of individual newsgroups. The newsgroups are category divisions. There are thousands—if not millions of newsgroups within Usenet.

WARNING: Because no one really organizes or keeps things tidy around Usenet, it’s often better to lurk than it is to post messages. Lurking means you just hang around and don’t post a message or an answer to any messages.

If you do post, be careful of the following:

  1. Be very, very polite. It’s easy to start a "flame war" where you and someone else start savaging each other in posted messages (or via e-mail).
  2. DO NOT include your e-mail address unless you want to be swamped with hundreds of replies per day.
